Genuine Mopar Brake Shoes

Maintain Stopping Power with Quality Brake Shoes

Most drivers know the basic functions of their vehicle's systems, but fewer understand the signs of gradual wear and when replacement becomes necessary. Brake shoes are the curved friction components used in drum brake systems. They press outward against the inside of the brake drum to create stopping force. While many modern vehicles use disc brakes, drum brakes remain common on rear axles, especially in trucks and SUVs.

How Brake Shoes Create Stopping Force

The shoes are mounted inside a drum and remain stationary until you apply the brakes. Hydraulic pressure pushes the shoes outward against the drum's inner surface in your Dodge Durango or Chrysler 300. The friction material bonded to each shoe creates the resistance needed to slow the wheels. A return spring pulls the shoes back when you release the brake pedal.

Why Brake Shoes Wear Down

The friction material gradually erodes with repeated brake applications. Heat and pressure cause microscopic particles to wear away from the shoe surface. Heavy loads and aggressive braking accelerate this process. Genuine Mopar brake shoes use friction materials specifically formulated for your vehicle's weight and typical use. Generic aftermarket shoes may not meet the same quality standards and could wear prematurely. The brake drums also experience wear and may need resurfacing or replacement.

When New Shoes Become Essential

Inspect brake shoes during regular maintenance intervals. Most shoes need replacement when the friction material reaches one-eighth inch thickness. Warning signs include reduced braking effectiveness or grinding noises.
